Giant water lily" light structure - Domaine-Howard, Sherbrooke

A giant illuminated water lily transforms the park's pond and ice rink into an attraction that is accessible all year round.

An iconic park transformed by light art in all seasons

How can you create a poetic and immersive atmosphere in a municipal park while respecting the environment, night sky protection standards, and public maintenance constraints?
In 2020, as part of its winter initiative, the City of Sherbrooke commissioned Leblanc Illuminations-Canada to design a permanent, original, and iconic light structure capable of transforming the Domaine-Howard into a truly enchanting visual experience.

In this case study, discover how the installation of a luminous "giant water lily" created a strong point of interest that is accessible all year round, blending harmoniously with the park's pond and ice rink.

Project background

As part of a winter program focused on light and magic, the City wanted to:

  • Enhance the pond and ice rink with an iconic structure.

  • Create a lasting visual focal point that is visible in both summer and winter.

  • Provide an immersive atmosphere that brings together all generations.

  • Ensure low impact on the environment and the night sky.

  • Stay within a maximum budget of $20,000 before taxes.

Technical parameters and constraints

Budget: $20,000 (supplies + installation)
Dimensions: Approximately 20 feet high
Durability: Designed to withstand weather and vandalism
Safety: glare-free lighting, buried cables, secure traffic areas
Environment: Compliance with Bylaw No. 395 (night sky), the PIIA, and validation by the Urban Planning Advisory Committee
Installation: Concrete slab, granular foundations, and anchors

Technical implementation

The project was entrusted to Leblanc Illuminations-Canada, which designed a custom light display inspired by water lilies, iconic landmarks of the park's lake.

The light structure is visible on all four sides, day and night, all year round. It complements the light projections already in place on the ice rink and pond.

The installation was carried out in collaboration with a local installer commissioned by Leblanc, ensuring that it blends in with the site and provides optimal safety for the public.

Positive effects

  • Magical atmosphere: a "wow" effect felt in both winter and summer.

  • Strong visual landmark: enhancement of the Howard Estate.

  • Permanent accessibility: low maintenance, proven durability.

  • Environmental respect: reducing the impact on wildlife and the night sky.

  • Urban approval: compliant with standards and accepted by the CCU.
